Jan Roberts Dominguez

Jan-Roberts-Dominguez is an award-winning writer and artist. She wrote and illustrated a weekly food column, "Food For Thought, for the Corvallis Gazette-Times from 1983 to 2020, and a syndicated column, "Fresh Approach," from 1985 to 2019. That weekly column was widely read in various newspapers around the country. "Preserving," a seasonal column on preserving food, had a 20-year run in The Oregonian. She is the author illustrator of 5 cookbooks, the latest being “Oregon Hazelnut Country – The Food, The Drink, The Spirit.” Jan has a BS from California State Polytechnic University, and a MS in foods and nutrition from Oregon State University.

When Jan started writing a newspaper column for The Oregonian’s FOODday section in 1985, she was providing black and white line drawings of food art to accompany her stories. Then her editor

asked if she would produce color art so they could feature her stories on the front page of the section. Watercolors seemed like the most visual and exciting medium. So that’s how it began. Of course, the food art quickly morphed into painting landscapes of all the Oregon scenery she and her

family backpacked through each summer. It was a way to keep enjoying her outdoor experiences, even back in her studio. She knew then – as her career as a food writer and cookbook author progressed – that producing landscapes and “food art” would always be a part of her professional life.
